Impact of Bariatric Surgery on Asthma Severity and Medication Use

Bariatric surgery improves many obesity-related comorbidities, yet the literature remains inconclusive on the impact of bariatric surgery on asthma. Our primary objective was to identify the long-term impact of bariatric surgery on asthma severity and medication use. A retrospective review was completed of all patients with a diagnosis of asthma who underwent bariatric surgery over 10 years at a single institution. Primary outcomes were the number of asthma medications prescribed at five time points (preoperative, postoperative < 18 months, 19–36 months, 37–60 months, 60 + months) after bariatric surgery.
