A Low-Side-Lobe Transmissive Antenna Based on Linear-to-Circular Polarization Conversion Metasurface

In this paper, a low-side-lobe transmissive antenna based on a linear-to-circular polarization conversion metasurface (PCMS) is proposed. It can generate left-handed circularly polarized (LHCP) wave and right-handed circularly polarized (RHCP) wave under the incidence of linearly polarized (LP) wave, respectively. The polarization conversion as well as the independent control of amplitude and phase are achieved using element structure of the receiving-transmitting layer. The amplitude modulation is realized by rotating the metal patch of the receiving layer, while the phase modulation is realized by rotating the metal patch of the transmitting layer. The planar amplitude distribution on the metasurface satisfies the Taylor distribution, which can reduce sidelobe level of the antenna. To generate RHCP waves, phase-only and amplitude-phase-independent modulated metasurfaces are designed and simulated for verification. The comparison results show that the proposed amplitude-phase independent modulation metasurface antenna possesses excellent side-lobe level. Therefore, the proposed low side lobe antenna will be promising for point-to-point wireless and satellite communication applications under interference conditions.
