Designing a Storage Yard

The storage yard is the place to store containers before containers are loaded onto vessels and carried out by road trucks. This chapter addresses the design problem of the storage yard. Statistical models are provided to estimate the handling capacity of yard crane in a block, and then it is discussed how to determine the optimal configuration of a block, which may be specified by the number of bays, the number row in a bay, and the number of tiers. In addition, it is discussed how to determine the layout of the storage yard by using a simulation study. The next section analyzes the expected number of rehandles for a given configuration of a bay, which is an important performance measure to consider for designing a bay.
