Abstract
The digitization, digitalization and digital transformation of vegetable supply chains in developing economies has emerged as a promising solution to address the challenges of efficiency, transparency, and information management. This research focuses on the case study of Sri Lanka, a developing economy in Asia, to understand the complexities and information gaps present in its traditional vegetable supply chain. By conducting in-depth interviews and value chain analysis, the study identifies the prevailing digital transformation behaviors among stakeholders, with most falling under the categories of “Paper Masters” and “Digital Migrants,” demonstrating limited digital adoption. To address these challenges and promote digital transformation, a conceptual framework is proposed, involving a data collection platform through a mobile-based application. The platform aims to enhance efficiency, transparency, and decision-making by enabling real-time data collection and sharing among stakeholders. However, the adoption of digital technologies faces obstacles, such as inadequate digital infrastructure, traditional mindsets, financial constraints, and limited digital literacy. Despite these challenges, the study highlights the potential benefits of digital transformation, including optimized resource allocation, increased transparency, and reduced waste in terms of material, financial, and information. Ultimately, the study provides valuable insights for developing economies to embrace digital transformation and build more sustainable and efficient vegetable supply chains for the future.
