Single-Phase Isolated Bidirectional AC-DC Converter for Electric Vehicles- Review

Currently, in order to achieve full utilization of electrical energy, electric vehicle chargers are mostly bi-directional trending, which enables both the grid to charge the electric vehicle battery and the battery to provide energy to the grid when the electric vehicle is not in operation, thus reducing the pressure on the grid operation. There are two topologies for electric vehicle chargers: single-stage and two-stage. This paper reviews the topologies and control strategies of single phase isolated bidirectional AC-DC converter with isolation transformer in both single and two-stage types of chargers, and compares the maximum power, number of switches and achieved efficiency of the above reviewed topologies.
