Fuzzy Logic Approach Based Fault Detection in Multi Terminal HVDC Transmission Systems

Multiterminal High-Voltage Direct Current (MTHVDC) systems have emerged as a promising solution to enhance power transmission efficiency and capacity. However, ensuring robust and adaptive protection for these systems is a complex challenge. This paper presents an innovative protection approach for MT-HVDC systems, utilizing a fuzzy inference system (FIS) to enhance fault detection and localization. This FIS is structured into distinct rules. The fault detection role is to detect the presence of a fault within either the AC or DC segments. Faulty section identification is dedicated to precisely locating the fault within a specific section, and faulty pole identification is designed for identifying the specific faulty pole. The proposed method excels in quickly detecting faults, solely relying on measurements taken at the rectifier end without requiring any communication infrastructure. The effectiveness of this method is comprehensively assessed across various scenarios including diverse fault types. These extensive evaluations underscore the adaptability and robustness of the FIS protection approach and showcase its potential to swiftly clear faults within 1 ms.
