Hydrogen storage properties of metal borohydrides and their improvements: Research progress and trends

Metal borohydrides exhibit remarkable hydrogen storage capabilities. Nevertheless, the practical application of metal borohydrides as onboard hydrogen storage materials is constrained owing to their elevated hydrogen release temperatures, limited reversibility, and sluggish kinetics. This paper presents an overview of the current research advancements concerning the hydrogen storage capacity of metal borohydrides and the measures employed to improve their properties, encompassing ionic substitution, nano-methods, catalytic doping, and the construction of composite systems. Lastly, this article scrutinizes the challenges and prospects associated with metal borohydrides, proposes methodologies to augment their hydrogen storage capabilities, and furnishes guidelines for further research on metal borohydrides and the broader hydrogen storage domain.
