Probing Cytoplasmic Streaming Using Liquid Crystal Droplets

Giant cells of characean algae provide an excellent platform for testing different techniques to explore cytoplasmic streaming, electrophysiological behaviour, intercellular communication, and drug delivery methods. In this study, we successfully applied nematic emulsions based on 5CB to visualise the shuttle flow in cells' cytoplasm. Additionally, we demonstrate the compatibility of the liquid crystal material with the intracellular environment.
