28. from Individual Motivation to Initiation: A Longitudinal Cohort Study Assessing the Associations Between Behavioral Motivation Traits and Risk of Substance Use Initiation among Us Adolescents

Adolescence is a developmental period characterized by substantial neurodevelopmental changes within brain reward learning and motivational systems, which leads to adolescents' increased likelihood to pursue risk-taking, novelty, and sensation seeking behaviors. Previous imaging studies have shown a link between these neurobiological changes and adolescents' substance use behavior. However, no epidemiologic studies have explored the associations between behavioral motivation traits and substance use initiation among adolescents.
