•An entropy engineering strategy to design sulfur-resistant Ni-based catalysts is put forward.•The pre-sulfided high-entropy catalyst exhibits stable DRM performance in 100 h compared to the control (Ni3)Al18Ox.•The key essence of sulfur resistance lies in the lower adsorption energy of SO2 on the high-entropy catalyst.
