Bei dieser neuartigen Umsetzung entsteht zunächst ein Keteniminium-Schlüsselintermediat, das dann zu einer Vielzahl cyclischer und acyclischer Produkte reagiert. Das Substitutionsmuster des Inamids entscheidet, welches Produkt entsteht (siehe Schema; EWG=elektronenziehende Gruppe, Ts=p-Toluolsulfonyl).
