•Oxygen storage capacity is improved as temperature higher than 550 °C.•Desorption rates were obtained by fitting the curves with a kinetic model.•Desorption rate constant rises with temperature but decreases with Al doping amount.•Ideal oxygen production rate is proposed to evaluate sorbent performance.
