Nitrapyrin

Nitrapyrin was first described in 1962 by Goring as a nitrification inhibitor. Applies to soils for inhibits the conversion of ammonium nitrogen to nitrite nitrogen. It is used for a variety of crops such as corn, sorghum and wheat. Nitrapyrin showed slight acute toxicity via dermal and oral routes of exposure (Toxicity Category III). Moreover, causes moderate irritation to the eyes (Toxicity II) and slight irritation to skin (Toxicity Category IV). The major route of elimination was the urine >80%. The hepatocellular tumor formation was established at 125 mg kg−1 day−1, and absence of increases in hepatocellular tumors at ≤75 mg kg−1 day−1. Nitrapyrin has a suggestive evidence of carcinogenic potential.
