In March, 2022, a protest against the new Banchare Danda landfill site of Nuwakot District in Nepal, which is built for sustainable management of waste, led to 100 000 tons of solid waste being dumped in the streets of Kathmandu.1 The monsoon season arrived in June, a week earlier than expected and, with COVID-19 restrictions lifted and migrants flocking to the capital, conditions were ideal for the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes that transmit the dengue virus.
