Chapter Six - Internet of Things to enhanced living and care environments for elderly: Applications and challenges.

Aging is a life's phase that presents challenges due to lower functional capacity that can be a consequence of poor quality of life. Technologies such as the Internet of Things, have helped to improve the quality of life for elders. Applications in intelligent environments such as hospitals, are not a reality for most countries, but once incorporated they allow for improved quality of life due to the autonomy and independence provided. This chapter presents a rapid literature review of advances including the Internet of Things and Living Environment related to elderly and healthy aging based on academic bases: PubMed, Scopus, and IEEE Xplorer. The PRISMA was applied, and 58 papers were classified into 10 categories, including design and investigative approaches. Challenges related to systems of care for the aging were discussed and it was concluded that questions about the importance of senior adaptability, privacy and security issues deserve further attention.
