Enabling Network Protection Using Switching-Based Availability Analysis of IEC 61850

The reliability of the existing substation automation system is the subject of this research. This system, forming a subset of cyber–physical systems, consists of both cyber and physical components, switches, intelligent devices, and cables. Since IEC 61850 is the most commonly adopted standard for substation automation, it is considered that the substation complies with it. Using the IEC 61850-based substation protection system, the failure scenarios within the substation are characterized, and their effects are investigated. Multiple ethernet switch orientations are considered in the reliability modeling and analysis of the IEC 61850-based substation protection system. Further, the reliability of the substation and the affected area within the substation are identified. The modified architecture of the IEC 61850-based substation protection system proved to enhance the availability of affected areas within the substation.
