摘要
We were pleasantly surprised to read the recent article on carcinomatous transformation of odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) by Kumchai et al, 1 Kumchai H, Champion AF, Gates JC: Carcinomatous transformation of odontogenic keratocyst and primary intraosseous carcinoma: a systematic review and report of a case. J Oral Maxillofac Surg https://doi.org/10.1016/j.joms.2020.12.046. Google Scholar who conducted a literature-based analysis. This study had a degree of semantic confusion and there were some inaccuracies in the inclusion criteria. For example, the authors avoided using the current term dentigerous cyst, favoring instead the erroneous term follicular cyst in the Introduction section. Robinson, 2 Robinson HBG Classification of cysts of the jaws. Am J Orthod Oral Surg. 1945; 31: 370 Abstract Full Text PDF Scopus (21) Google Scholar in 1945, was the first to point out that the prefix follicular is misleading, as this type of developmental odontogenic cyst is not formed from a tooth follicle of mesodermal origin, and the enamel organ, an ectodermal derivation, is merely a contributing structure. Acceptance of Robinson's suggestion was rapid, and over the last 70 years, the prefix dentigerous has been employed worldwide, 3 Neville BW Damm DD Allen CM Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. 4th ed.
