•Clinically-relevant microbubbles composed of DBPC:DSPE-PEG2000 are more stable than those composed of DSPC:PEG40S.•Temperature, but not serum-containing medium, reduces the stability of both formulations.•Both formulations are inhibitory to bone cell metabolism and growth only at high concentrations and long exposure times.•DSPC:PEG40S microbubbles are more inhibitory to bone cell metabolism than DBPC: DSPE-PEG2000, due to the PEG40S component.•Microbubble-cell contact is not responsible for the inhibitory activity of microbubbles.
