Investigation on the Changes of Strength Properties and Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity of Granite and Sandstone after High-Temperature Treatment and Liquid Nitrogen Quenching

The effects of high-temperature treatment and liquid nitrogen quenching on the strength characteristics and ultrasonic pulse velocity of granite and sandstone were detailed in this study. The samples were subject to varying duration of furnace treatment and quenching in liquid nitrogen (LIN) and measured for their strength properties and pulse velocity at normal temperature. The results indicate that the treatment can reduce the mechanical strength and pulse velocity of granite and sandstone. The results reveal that rock pre-treatments illustrate a declining tendency in both strength properties of rock specimens. Granite samples indicate a reduction in UCS of 57
