•Ratio of peak areas of MIR quantified OM dynamics in soil.•Using ratio of peak area increases our understanding of soil aggregate dynamics.•High C/N OM resulted in slow decomposition and gradual aggregation.•Low C/N OM fostered rapid macroaggregate formation and subsequent reorganisation.•Assigning a MIR band to a C group indicating its stability can be misleading.
