•Crystalline Cu2O nanospheres encapsuled in amorphous Ti-Fe layer double hydroxide nanosheets (TF-Cu2O) were prepared.•The growth mechanism of the TF-Cu2O samples was uncovered.•The photocatalytic principle of TF-Cu2O for antibiotic removal was attributed to the Z-scheme photocharge separation and amorphous active sites.
