•We compared GPP and MODIS VIs for 47 North American evergreen forest sites.•Snow had substantial effects on GPP-VI relationships.•GPP-VI relationships varied among ecoregions and climate classes.•CCI and NIRv outperformed other indices in estimating GPP.•CCI was able to track seasonal GPP in Mediterranean sites.
