•This work reports a 3D boron-doped carbon nitride with frustrated Lewis pairs and defects.•The honeycomb-like 3D CN presents an improved nitrogen electro-fixation rate.•The frustrated Lewis pairs accelerate N2 chemisorption and activation.•The 3D structure favors the contact between the electrolyte and the active sites.
