Plants have the ability to respond by different means during stress conditions and these stress conditions often lead to the production of various metabolites and some specific metabolites known as phtyo-oxylipins. Phyto-oxylipins are the products of oxidative transformation of unsaturated fatty acids produced from diverse metabolic pathways. Biochemical analysis and genetic approaches have provided convincing evidence that these phyto-oxylipin-based signaling systems are very important components of this network. A. thaliana esterified oxylipins are found to be produced under wounding, freezing, and pathogen infection. The spontaneous formation of plant oxylipins occurs in plants under normal conditions but this process intensifies significantly under different abiotic stress conditions. This review is focused on providing insights concerning phyto-oxylipins biosynthesis via enzymatic and non-enzymatic pathways.
