Lipidomic Identification

Lipid identification is the central step in any lipidomics workflow. This chapter describes the various analytical techniques such as chromatography, mass spectrometry, or ion mobility spectrometry, which contribute to unambiguous identification of lipids. In this respect, it will shed light not only on the strengths but also the drawbacks of each method, with a distinct emphasis on lipid fragmentation by mass spectrometry, because this is what can be regarded as the core tool in any lipidomic identification process. Additionally, a list of useful and commonly encountered lipid fragments in mass spectrometry will be provided.
