•The main purpose of FeOOH addition was to promote the decomposition of O3 into •OH.•Four types of surface hydroxyl in FeOOH presented various •OH production abilities.•Vacancy hydroxyl was the main functional surface hydroxyl for •OH formation.•Neutral surface hydroxyl was advantageous during ozone catalysis.•A route involving •OH production on the surface hydroxyl of FeOOH is proposed.
