•A novel strain sensing cable and sensing system were proposed based on UWFBG array.•Strain sensing performance of the cable and system was confirmed by laboratory and field tests.•Strengthening mechanism of the post-grouting pile was well explained based on distributed strain data.•UWFBG array has significant potentials in structural health monitoring.
