Radiation-induced corrosion model for copper-coated used fuel containers. Part 1. Validation of the bulk radiolysis submodel

This paper describes the development of a mixed-potential model coupling the anodic dissolution of copper to the oxidation and reduction of various radiolysis products, allowing the long-term prediction of the radiation-induced corrosion of copper. The overall conceptual model is described, followed by a more detailed discussion of the use of the commercial COMSOL software to predict bulk radiolysis behavior. Various methods are used to validate the COMSOL bulk radiolysis model, including comparison with short-term experimental data reported in the literature. The underlying principles and assumptions along with the results of the validation procedures are also presented.
