摘要
Wound repair is an important process that involves a cascade of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines that work together to restore tissue integrity and function. There are prolonged inflammatory and delayed anti-inflammatory phases in the presence of microbes such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses, resulting in wound worsening, incomplete tissue repair, and delayed healing due to excessive inflammation of the injury. To prevent microbial contamination, various antimicrobial formulations are currently in clinical use. Despite the availability of numerous agents, the efficacy of antimicrobial wound dressing is limited due to the emergence of drug resistance and the limited efficacy of nanoparticles. As a result, more research and investment are needed to develop efficient wound dressing agents with higher efficacy, lower resistance, and cost-effectiveness for widespread use. This chapter provides an overview of the current state of the field of antimicrobial wound healing agents, identifies gaps, and discusses the future outlook for developing more efficient wound healing agents.
