•Gelatin microspheres were prepared via a water/oil emulsion route.•Silica hollow microspheres were synthesized using gelatin microspheres as sacrificial templates.•Silica hollow microspheres possessed a spherical morphology with a hollow structure.•They were biocompatible to support cell attachment and proliferation.
