Design and Initial Characterization of the UTSI Mach 7 Ludwieg Tube

A new hypersonic Ludwieg tube has been constructed at the University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) to support increased research activities related to hypersonic vehicle development. The 45.72 cm by 45.72 cm (18" by 18") nozzle exit dimension allows for large models to be tested and for development of flow diagnostic techniques on a scale similar to high-speed test and evaluation (T&E) facilities at AEDC. A description of the facility design and initial flow characterization is provided. A discussion of the remaining design upgrades is also provided.
