Development of Data Compression Method of Partial Discharge Waveform for Remote Insulation Diagnosis in Manhole for Power Transmission Cable

Continuous partial discharge (PD) measurement is essential for preventing dielectric breakdown at power cable joints installed in manholes. However, transmitting measured PD data from a manhole to an aboveground station is difficult because obtaining power to operate measuring and communication devices is complex, and the radio wave is significantly attenuated. Low power wide area (LPWA) technology can realize that, but data transmission speeds are limited. Thus, a high-efficiency data compression method is required for continuous PD measurement in a manhole using LPWA. This paper developed a data compression method for PD waveforms based on Gaussian process regression to overcome the transmission speed limitations of LPWA. The method could reduce the size of the PD data by a minimum of 10%.
