A normal contact force model for viscoelastic bodies and its finite element modeling verification

•A normal contact force model is established for the contact of viscoelastic bodies.•The model expresses the energy dissipation with viscoelastic material properties.•A means to verify the validity of the model is performed with the FEM simulations.•Calculations of the model agree with the FEM results and former experimental data.
