HIGHLIGHTS• A chemical modification by adding Na 2 SiO 3 accelerates the conversion from Q 4 to Q 3 , and further to Q 2 structure in glass networks of LS.• Reactive Si and Al can be largely released by the addition of Na 2 SiO 3 to enhance the pozzolanic activity of MGLS.• Retardations of early strength (3~7 d) can be mitigated by increasing the content of Na 2 SiO 3 in P-MGLS pastes.• The 90 d UCS value of P-MGLS15 paste showing a quite compact microstructure reaches the maximum of 53.61 MPa, even higher than that of PPC paste (52.35 MPa).
