摘要
•Currently, enteric nervous system (ENS) has become the target for congenital and acquired pathologies not only the gut but also the nervous system as a whole.•With in-depth research being done on association of ENS with other neurological disorders there is definite paucity of literature in understanding the development of ENS in the human gut.•Previous studies are done on animal models.•The current study analyzed the qualitative changes occurring in the developing myenteric ganglia of human fetal ascending and sigmoid colon from 13 to 26 weeks of gestation including a 2 months old postnatal specimen.•The major findings were that the size of the myenteric neurons appeared to be larger with increasing weeks of gestation suggesting a process of neuronal maturation, but the number of the neurons seemed to be reduced.•At 23 and 26 WG, a mature pattern of nitrergic innervation was observed.•The current study will help the scientific community in understanding the morphology of ENS in human colon.
