Abstract
BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disease in women at reproductive age and it is the main cause of anovulation.In addition to the main clinical manifestations, the disease has a big relation to hyperinsulinism and insuline resistance.So, the association between PCOS and insuline resistance motivated studies about the use of metformin on this syndrome treatment due to the proven drug action as an insulin sensitizer.METHODS: The study is a narrative review of literature and it has the goal of clarify the impact of using metformin on the PCOS treatment.RESULTS: As a reference to the article, there were selected ten review studies, four clinical trials, two guidelines, one prospective study and one manuscript.DISCUSSION: The use of metformin on PCOS treatment presented some significant results mainly in patients with obesity and hyperinsulinemia: the drug decreases Body Mass Index (BMI) and it decreases fasting insulin levels.However, it was evidenced that metformin in comparing to other drugs shows lower results in ovulation rate.CONCLUSION: The metformin has been shown to be effective as combined therapy with Clomiphene and Letrozole in treatment of PCOS, however, there is no consensus about using the drug as monotherapy.
