From the drawing board to the product, crystalline protein assemblies with alternating compact and porous layers were obtained. Trimeric protein RSL, with pseudo-C6 symmetry, forms honeycomb assemblies in the presence of cucurbit[7]uril. A coiled-coil fused to the N terminus of RSL re-forms the honeycomb assembly but with poorly packed spacer layers. Such bio-supramolecular tectonics could serve the development of biomaterials.
