Ultrasonographic measurement of abdominal and gluteal-femoral fat thickness as a predictor for android/gynoid ratio

•Ultrasonography can be an alternative to dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry to estimate body fat composition.•Subcutaneous fat thickness in the upper and lower abdominal regions and visceral abdominal fat thickness in the xiphoid-umbilical line predict the android/gynoid ratio.•Significant correlation between ultrasonographic measurement of fat thickness and android/gynoid ratio in the female population.•No significant correlation between ultrasonographic measurement of fat thickness and android/gynoid ratio in the male population.
