•Transcripts and hormone biomarkers of physiological age (E0) were proposed.•PLS-R revealed 46 genes correlated to E0.•Over expression of auxin transport and cell wall remodeling genes in low E0.•Over expression of ethylene and abscisic acid (ABA) genes in high E0.•ABA, SA, IAA and trans-zeatin were present in higher concentrations in high E0.
