The Endogenous Formation of Common Pool Resource Coalitions

•We study the endogenous formation of common pool resource coalitions.•The experiment participants were Chilean fishers and university students.•Fishers often formed the grand coalition when the cost of deterring poaching was low.•Fishers invested in deterrence frequently and these investments reduced poaching.•Students formed coalitions less frequently and these coalitions tended to be small.
