•Heel pressure injuries (PIs) are common preventable injuries acquired by hospitalised patients.•The Prevalon™ protector boot reduces heel PI occurrence in intensive care (ICU) patients.•ICU patients wearing the Prevalon™ boot were significantly less likely to develop heel PIs.•ICU patients who wore the Prevalon™ boot developed less severe heel PIs.
