Singing For Lung Health

This chapter considers the literature relating to the use of singing for lung health. A major challenge across obstructive and restrictive lung conditions is the management of breathlessness. Breathlessness is both a physical symptom and also exacerbated by psychological factors. However, singing mimics physiotherapy techniques for breathlessness management and provides a socially supportive environment that helps to address the mental health challenges of lung disease. Results from quantitative and qualitative studies are overviewed, current practice in the UK and abroad is described, and recommendations for future research, training, and funding are made.
