摘要
Fishing activity generates million tons of fish waste every day. This material, which is usually returned to the sea as discards, it is an enormous natural source of calcium phosphate (CaP). In this regard, there is a strong belief that the use of CaP nanomaterials will revolutionize many biomedical applications. Due to their close similarity in composition and size with natural bone and their biocompatibility, CaP nanoparticles are considered good candidates to be used in orthopedic and dental applications. The use of biogenic CaP nanoparticles is being intensely investigated as coatings for orthopedic implants to facilitate osseointegration and reduce adverse tissue responses. Additionally, their use is extended to many different other applications, such as drug delivery systems, enamel regeneration, diseases detection, etc. Biogenic CaP nanoparticles can inherit properties from the raw material, which is desirable for biomedical applications. This overview presents some of the most studied applications of CaP nanoparticles and the results of obtaining CaP nanoparticles from fish bones using laser ablation technique undertaken by our group.
