For the characterization of the turbidite sequences, we conduct seismic modeling based on the propagator matrix method for the calibration of well and seismic data. One of the advantages of the modeling method is its ability for the conservation of dynamic information of seismic reflections which is especially important for the layered media due to the presence of inner reflections and tuning effects. We then propose a seismic amplitude inversion method based on a designed sand-shale binary model and the propagator matrix method as a modeling engine. The inversion method is tested on theoretical models and then applied to a real 2D seismic data set. The output profiles of the sand layers show reasonable agreements with the designed models for theoretical test, and with velocity loggings for real data application. Thus, the inverted results can be used for the characterization of thin layered sand-shale reservoirs. The method can be further developed for the applications to other interbed systems such as the salt-shale sequence.
