Atherosclerosis is an inflammation with the formation of plaques of fat, calcium and other elements in the middle and intimate layer of artery walls in the human body, either in diffuse or localized form. It is characterized by the narrowing and hardening of arteries due to the accumulation of fat in its walls, known as atheroma.1 Over the years, the growth of plaques causes the narrowing of the vessel, which may reach complete obstruction, restricting blood flow in the region.
