Comparison of Glyph Visualization Methods for Structural Stress Tensors

This work is devoted to the comparison of methods for visualization of tensor fields based on the construction of glyph surfaces for visualization of the stress field as a result of the three-dimensional structural analysis. A representative volume of a linear isotropic material was chosen as the analyzed object. Three types of glyph surfaces were considered, the subtypes of these surfaces and the algorithms for their construction were shown. Different methodologies for transforming the original tensor and glyph surfaces are shown, which are best suited for visualizing the structural stress field. The transformation algorithms presented in this work allow to qualitatively visualize tensor fields with negative eigenvalues, which is a fundamental difference from the already known visualization methods and is also fundamental for visualizing stress tensors as results of the three-dimensional structural analysis.
