There were also 241 and 4280 hits for H. velutipes as opposed to just 1 and 140 forH. bakeri in Google Scholar and Google, respectively (accessed 22 Nov 2020). Further, the multilocus phylogenetic overview of the Agaricales published by Matheny & al. (in Mycologia 98: 982–985. 2006), as part of the Assembling the Fungal Tree of Life (AFTOL) project, utilizes just two species of Hebeloma, H. olympianum and H. velutipes. As the name Hebeloma velutipes is well established and has been widely used since its inception, we see no justification for replacing that name by the unfamiliar name H. bakeri, which has been relatively unused, even in North America, even though it was introduced 68 years earlier. We therefore propose the conservation of the well-established and currently widely used name Hebeloma velutipes over H. bakeri.
