•SLS is selected as the depressant of galena in chalcopyrite flotation.•H2O2 can strengthen the depressive of SLS on galena by oxidizing its surface.•SLS can be selectively adsorbed on galena through chemical adsorption.•The oxidation rate of H2O2 on the surface of galena is greater than chalcopyrite.
