The paper deals with hydraulic assessment of protection structures of dams based on the evaluation of experimental measurements carried out on the physical hydraulic models in the water management laboratory of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, CTU in Prague. Studies of diversion of extreme flood discharges have recently been performed in the Korycany Dam whose conclusions confirm insufficient capacity of the existing protection structures - emergency spillways for the transfer of a Q(10000) control flood wave. Modifications and reconstructions of safety structures at Korycany dam were developed by designers who calculated the consumption curves of spillways and longitudinal profiles of water levels using formulae of theoretic hydraulics and a 1D mathematical model. As this case of dam involve water flows through emergency spillways and chutes with extremely changeable slope characteristics, a relatively complex geometry with a variable width and longitudinal asymmetry, the flows arising here cannot be unambiguously described by mathematical means. For this reason, highly simplified theoretical hydraulic calculations must be verified by means of a physical hydraulic model.
