New approaches to distinguish shale-sourced and coal-sourced gases in petroleum systems

•Currently used approaches poorly distinguish thermogenic gases sourced by shales and coals.•The study presents newly designated genetic fields and shale/coal separation lines on genetic diagrams.•The new approaches are designed, tested and validated using a large global dataset.
